AIDS: 30 years later disease claimed 30 million lives
Thirty years ago, on June 5, 1981, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the first official medical description of AIDS.
The report is now widely associated with the beginning of the global epidemic, National Press Foundation reported.
Three decades later, AIDS has claimed the lives of more than 30 million people. An estimated 34 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS.
According to the latest UNAIDS Global AIDS Report, only about a third of those in low and middle income countries are receiving antiretroviral therapy.
