ANC not to negotiate with regime - activist

The opposition Armenian National Congress will no longer negotiate with the authorities; instead, it will start talks with those who stand ready to fight the regime, an ANC activist has said.

Levon Zurabyan, the coordinator of the opposition alliance, told a news conference on Tuesday that they do not find any sense in continuing the negotiations with the ruling authorities. He said democracy is maximum sustainable in countries capable of developing a dialogue between the government and the opposition. Zurabyan noted that such attempts in Armenia failed, with the authorities refusing such scenario.

"The toppling of the gang rule is an important task, sowe will take any step to undermine the ruling political regime. The [Armenian National] Congress is consistent and resolute, and will continue [the struggle] until the end," he said, refusing to make any prediction on a possible collapse of the ruling coalition.

The activist said the failure of public governance proved the regime's incapability to overcome the existing challenges.

He further spoke of what he considered conflicts and tension in the government circles.

"Any force which rejects collaboration, refusing to back the regime for fear of the threats to the country, begins fighting that regime, becoming the natural ally of the people," he added.

Zurabyan said they have no pre-arranged deals with political forces represented in the ruling coalition though he did not rule out the possibility of collaboration with certain segments of the ruling Republican Party.

"The current situation in the country should make everybody realize the threat of [President] Serzh Sargsyan's regime to the statehood. We are not asking anyone to join or support us. What we say is that the country is facing a battle between the regime and the freedom-loving people. We seek for the collapse of the criminal oligarchy, and we will realize our goal in a resolute manner," he said.
