Depression main cause of suicides and sexual deviations – experts

Depression appears to be the main cause of suicides and indifference to the future, according to Samvel Khodoyan, a doctor of psychology.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the expert said the factors leading to depression vary vastly.

"Anything can cause depression. The condition is mostly characteristic to gamblers, sectarians and people from socially vulnerable families," he said, adding that people with mental disorders are also prone to suicides.

Vrezh Shahramanyan, a sexologist also attending the news conference, spoke of the sexual impact of depression, stressing the e importance of sex education in childhood and a family atmosphere that may lead to sexual deviations.

Both experts recommended parents to think of children's sex education since early ages, giving up the practice of telling them fairytales about their birth.

"The likelihood of difficulties in a relationship with the opposite sex is higher in children whose families lack harmony. For instance, a mother's dominant role may develop in a boy child a wrong understanding about gender relations.  Or, seeing their fathers beat mothers, children may think until the end of their lives that this is the right conduct," Shahramanyan added.
