Armenians demand $50 million for Zeytun Gospels

The Armenian Orthodox Church continues the legal proceedings against the Los Angeles based Getty Museum in an effort to get back the first eight pages of the Zeytun Gospels 

Speaking to the Turkish newspaper Sabah, Vartkes Yeghiayan, an attorney representing the claimant's interests, said he had called for returning those pages to the chruch as its property.

"An Armenian professor who studied the pages confirmed that they form part of the well-known Zeytun Gospels kept in Armenia. We call on them to admit that those pages belong to us. They can be put on display if the church wishes so. But if no agreement is reached, we demand $50 million in compensation," he said, adding that the next hearing is due in May 2012.

Getty Museum bought the eight pages of the Gospels from a private collection in 1994.
