A group of unnamed cyber attackers calling themselves Armenian Cyberbank are reported to have hacked over 20 Azerbaijani websites.

According to the Armenian service of RFE/RL, the hackers have left a message on the sites, saying that actions are aimed at commemorating Gurgen Margaryan, the Armenian officer who was axed to death by an Azerbaijani lieutenant in Budapest in 2004.

The group is said to have modified the content 22 Azerbaijani sites. They have posted the deceased serviceman’s photo on the home pages and left the following message: “GURGEN MARGARYAN – 8 YEARS AGO – ALWAYS REMEMBER.”

Speaking to the radio station, Samvel Martirosyan, an information security expert, said this was the biggest ever hacker attack against Azerbaijani websites. Armenians had launched a similar attack in February 2011.

“Attacks normally increase in number in late February and so the Armenian websites would better be prepared for a retaliatory attack,” he warned.
