Auction house Sotheby's will auction an exceptionally rare Apple 1 computer - one of the first batch of machines that launched the PC era, The Daily Mail reported.

The computer - one of just 200 - is the first ever batch of computers ever produced - by hand - by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976.

With these machines, the duo's future became assured, setting in motion a chain of events which leads right up to today's smartphone and tablet era.

Steve Wozniak, the first man to ever type on a keyboard and see the letters appear on a screen before him, will appear in person at the auction, which will see one of these rare machines sold for somewhere in the region of $120,000 to £180,000.

It will be held on Friday, June 15 in New York, and the sale will also include handwritten notes by Steve Jobs in 1974 and the computer's original manuals.

“The Apple Computer” was created by Jobs and Wozniak and presented to the Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto the same year.

It was dismissed by everyone except Paul Terrell, the owner of a chain of stores called Byte Shop, who ordered 50 for $500 each which he then offered to the public for $666.66.
