Post-Hurricane aftereffects

No hurricane, regardless of its intensity scale, may pass harmless for the area. Apart from the losses of the human lives, the ecosystem of the affected zone gets highly damaged by the hurricanes.

In case of Hurricane Katherine the most long-lasting damage was incured by the ecolsystem of the affected zone, which in its turn had a direct negative impact on public health in New Orleans. The industrial waste, the oil leak caused incomprehensible impacts on the public health, the analysts say.

As for the latest Hurricane Sandy, its aftereffects and the range of the damage still needs to be assessed, the American experts predict. However even at this current stage Hurricane Sandy and generally the hurricanes of the last ten years have the same pre-context – the problem with a global warming.

A group of scientists believe that it's human activity that significantly impacts on global warming, causes abrupt swings in air and water temperatures which whirl hurricanes. Among suchlike human mischievous activities are lumbering, greenhouse gas emissions, large-scale industrial and agricultural processes, as outlined by the European scientists.

Again in refer to Sandy post-hurricane ecological damages Riverkeeper environmental non-profit organization stressed that toxic chemicals and substances flocked to New York’s harbour together with the petrol wastes, industrial, trading and residential trash; this exposes the ecological status of rivers to risk. The worst is that the pollution sourced not from one leak, but from different directions, Riverkeeper speaker John Lipscomb noted.

Other aftereffects

The British experts say that hurricanes also have great impact on water and underwater ecosystems - underwater inhabitants disappear, corals and underwater ground are exposed to high-level damage, the direction of water flow changes. But the main danger and negative impact is interconnected with the leak of toxic chemicals into the underwater, the scientists note.

Among some of the aftereffects of the hurricane the scientists noted the boost of negative metal elements in the air of the affected zone.

According to specialists, the hurricane also impacts on birth level of the hurricane-affected zone. American researchers studied the birth or miscarriage indices of almost 105 thousand pregnant women during the first 6-9 months of post-Katherine period. It turned out that during these months the indices for miscarriages has increased in the United States.

Female hurricanes

The practice of calling hurricanes by female names started from 1953 following the tradition of calling ships by female names. Hurricanes are named by Geneva World Meteorological Organization specialists in an alphabetical order. The list is updated every six years.

The mandatory precondition is to title those by short and comprehensible names, as well as to take into account the area of the affected zone. Hurricane names may be repeated once in 6 years, with the exception of those which caused the greatest damage to the planet's population, for example, Hurricane Katherine.
