Lower transport fares not to better quality – Yerevan mayor

Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan says improving the quality of the urban transport will not be realistic without price changes.


As he told the members of the municipal council today, the former 100 Drams passenger fare [$0.24] is not enough to ensure civilized transportation system in the capital city. He said the municipal authorities’ policies are now directed at making the traffic safe and comfortable for the population.


“The emerging problem deals with the social burden as it gives way to justified complaints. Unless we grant privileges to certain groups of the population, we will keep multiplying the burdens, both theirs and ours.


“With 100 Drams [$0.24], it is impossible to have a civilized transportation system. We will not manage this way to upgrade the existing network and meet all the demands that our population has had over the course of years,” he said, stressing the importance of quality control measures.


The members of the political forces represented in the city council (Republican Party, Prosperous Armenia, Hello Yerevan) agreed that it is necessary to enhance the urban transport quality, ensuring the safety of the passengers.


Margaryan said a special commission composed of NGO representatives and other interested people will be set up soon to study the social aspect of the decision to make it more comprehensive and optimal.


“We will put the main emphasis on an integrated payment system to offer options to the socially disadvantaged. This will also help raise the level of the passenger transportation companies’ social responsibility,” he noted.


The mayor promised at the end to consider and realize any initiative that will be in the interests of the capital city and its residents.
