Armenia to withdraw old passports from circulation in January
The old passports of the Republic of Armenia will be withdrawn from circulation starting from January next year, according to Mnatsakan Bichakyan, the head of the Passport and Visa Department of the Police.
In a video footage posted on the Armenian Police website, the police official says that the old passports will remain valid until their expiry date.
“Upon the expiry of the validity date and the entry into force of the law, the given person will no longer receive the old passports,” he says.
As for the biometric passports and ID cards, Bichakyan says they will offer many advantages to the Armenian citizens, particularly in the public services sector, as the special codes in the identity documents will be available also in electronic databases, facilitating procedures.
“The law requires that the public services code be also available on the identity card. The electronic identification archive, which has a high protectiveness conforming to international standards, ensures a better protection and use of the electronic digital signature than any other method of use” explains the police official.
Those wishing to obtain biometric passports are required to apply to the Department to return their old passports and submit a state duty receipt for a new passport; they will then be photographed, have their fingerprints taken and leave an electronic signature in the information database. The new passports will be issued within 15 days, says Bichakhyan.
