Penumbral lunar eclipse due on October 18

A penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible on Friday, October 18. People in Europe, Africa, parts of the Americas and parts of Asia can see the celestial phenomenon, Truthdive.com reported.


It will be seen between 9:51 p.m. Friday and 1:50 a.m. Saturday (GMT) and lasting for 239 minutes from eastern Canada and the upper north-east to Africa and most of Europe.


In central, western, and southern Asia, it happens before or during dawn on October 19. For sky-watchers in South and North America, maximum eclipse will be seen around the time of moonrise, which is also the time of sunset.


In Africa, Europe, and western Asia, the eclipse will occur in the middle of the night when the moon is high overhead. The celestial event will begin at around 3.20 am and will last for around four hours in India. The maximum penumbral lunar eclipse will be seen at around 5.20 am and will end at around 7.19 am on October 19 in India.


Lunar eclipses may be viewed by looking directly at them and it won’t require any additional equipment, like telescopes or binoculars.


October 18 event will be a penumbral lunar eclipse, which happens when the Moon passes through our Earth’s penumbra. This penumbra will cause a subtle darkening of the Moon’s surface. During this eclipse, the moon will pass through the outer edge of the Earth’s shadow or penumbra. By this time moon turns into a reddish or grey shade depending on the Earth’s atmosphere.


There are two kinds of shadow cast – the umbra and the penumbra. The penumbra is the surrounding lighter shadow and the umbra is a dark inner shadow.


This will be the last lunar eclipse of 2013. The next total lunar eclipse will occur on April 15, 2014.
