Mayoral election in Armenia’s Ararat on Sunday

On Friday, Armenian Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, as well as a number of members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Artur Gevorgyan, Arakel Movsisyan, Ararat Governor Aramais Grigoryan and other officials were in Ararat. 

A political team of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) led by PAP Chairman Gagik Tsarukyan arrived in the city as well.

The former team arrived to support the RPA candidate for the post of Ararat mayor Hayk Haykyan, and the latter was supporting the PAP candidate Samvel Barseghyan in the final round of the local elections.

Secretary of the PAP parliamentary group Naira Zohrabyan told Tert.am that the PAP held a rally at 4 Shahumyan Str in Ararat, and the RPA in the central square of the city. The mass media also raised a question as to which of the rallies will be attended by Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, who has great influence in the region.

Mrs Zohrabyan told Tert.am that about 5,000 attended their rally. The PAP chairman and the party’s candidate made speeches.

Asked if the parties encountered a problem of “letting the other have the hour” of the rally, Mrs Zohrabyan said that “we had planned to hold our rally near Shahumyan Street and we held our rally as we had planned.”

At a RPA rally in Ararat’s central square Mr Abrahamyan stated that the RPA candidate is presenting a realistic program.

“Do not believe the people that are giving promises only not to keep them,” Mr Abrahamyan said.

According to him, certain political forces are accusing the ruling party of “all the bad things,” but claim the responsibility for “all the good things.”

“Some people are causing harm to the president’s reputation. But we are gradually getting rid of such people and employ young professionals. With this end in view, we must elect the candidates that will be capable of resolving problems,” Mr Abrahamyan said.

The mayoral election is to be held in Ararat on Sunday.
