Excavations reveal ancient sites in Metsamor, Zorats Karer
Dr Ashot Piliposyan, Deputy Director of the Service for the Protection of Historical Environment and Cultural Museum Reservations nonprofit, told a news conference on Tuesday that an Armenian-Polish expedition conducted excavations in Metsamor and Zorats Karer, which revealed a site dating back to the 1st millennium BCE.
“No excavations have been conducted in Metsamor since 2006. We can be sure that the citadel existed before the late Middle Ages,” he said.
“The monument is really interesting. We have excavated part of it,” Dr Piliposyan said.
With respect to Zorats Karer, excavations will be continued there. According to the preliminary data, one complex includes an ancient settlement and a sepulcher, which was revealed as far back as 1930.
