US unwilling to let Russia have Nagorno-Karabakh trump card

The Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential meeting to be held in Vienna, Austria, on Tuesday is a US initiative aimed at resuming the failed negotiation process or at least simulating it, Heritage party member Styopa Safaryan told Tert.am.

“The problem is not only a number of unsettled issues – new POWs, situation on the Line of Contact, as well as the USA’s unwillingness to let Russia have the Nagorno-Karabakh trump card,” Mr Safaryan said.

As regards the priority questions Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan may raise, he pointed out a number of questions – from the extradition of Ramil Safarov and his being treated as a hero to the Armenian POW Hakob Injighulyan.

“We must once more demand the withdrawal of snipers from the Line of Contact and raise the issue of arms race,” Mr Safaryan said.
Just three days before the presidential meeting, the Azerbaijani side sniped at the Armenian border. Thus Azerbaijan is exerting pressure on the negotiation process for the Nagorno-Karabakh problem to be solved in its favor. Otherwise, a war will be unleashed.

“By employing this strategy Azerbaijan is intimidating the mediators into settling the conflict as soon as possible. No one has the right to accuse the Armenian side of being interested in resuming hostilities. I do not think the Armenian side has to prove its sincerity with new arguments, and the international community is well aware of it. The Armenian side is as a rule accused of maintaining the status quo,” Mr Safaryan said.

This period poses some risk to Armenia because official Yerevan has refused to initial an Association Agreement with the European Union (EU), he concluded.
