Yerevan Metro staff protesting pension reforms (photos)

The public protest against the pension reforms has spread to the Yerevan Metro CJSC whose employees demand that their full salaries be paid.


They gathered outside the company’s general headquarters on Wednesday for a rally against the funded pension system. Activists of I am Against!, the civic group campaigning against the reforms, also joined the crowd.


Speaking to Tert.am, Zaven Hovhannisyan, one of the protesting employees, said his January salary was 14,000 Drams ($34) less than it used to be.


“I don’t care if the law is good or bad; I want my 14,000 Drams, because I have received exactly that much less. So it turns out my salary has decreased. I don’t care of how the things will look like in 30 years; I need to provide for my children,” he said, stressing the need of eliminating the mandatory component of the pension law.


The amended pension law, which took effect on January 1, makes 5%-10% salary deductions for pension funds mandatory for all Armenian citizens born after 1973. On January 24, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling to temporarily suspend the mandatory component.


Andranik Gevorgyan, another Yerevan Metro employee attending the rally, said though the reforms do not apply to him (as he said he was born in 1973), he has joined the protest to support 30 of his colleagues who have submitted an appeal to the company’s administration.


“We have written the appeal, as the law requires … They have promised to respond to us, but they said they can do that in seven days,” said the man.


The company’s administration did not meet the protesting employees outside.


The civic group activists claimed tat the rally could have attracted a larger crowd if not pressures by the administration.


On February 10, artist of the Yerevan Opera and Ballet Theatre conducted a rally to protest against the pension reforms.
