Sacked Armenian metro drivers to appeal to court

The sacked drivers of Yerevan Metro are going to sue the company for the unilateral termination of their employment contracts.


Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the three drivers, Gagik Galstytan, Andranik Gevorgyan and Sevak Hovhannisyan, confirmed the earlier report that they had been suspended on  grounds of the employer’s distrust in their behavior.


“We haven’t received a written reproof. And It is fifteen years we have been working for the Metro. They said personally, in a private conversation with us, that they were sacking us because we had organized a protest. They blamed us for inviting journalists, calling the group I am Against! and communicating with them at all. We were asked to meet with the deputy director just half an hour after the protest, and it was our chief, Samvel Mnatsakanyan, that expressed distrust,” said Andranik Gevorgyan.


Several employees of Yerevan Metro took held a public protest on Wednesday against the pension reforms that make salary taxes mandatory for all the employed citizens of Armenia born after 1973.


David Manukyan, an activist of I am Against!, said they have lawyers among their friends who can offer counseling to the sacked drivers. He said the company’s decision to suspend the men without notice was illegal.


“This is a violation of human rights; an attempt is being made to exert pressure on the initiative. They are trying to stir up an atmosphere of fear. This will be our first appeal but not the last one. I think most of the claims will address the [salary] deductions. It is a big honor to these people that they did not behave like cowards; it must be an example for all. Where is the metro trade union? Why doesn’t it react at all to protect its workers?” he asked.


Manukyan said at the end that the group is now thinking about plans for a new rally.
