Armenia’s president has pledged that he will never seek a senior government post after the expiry of his second term in office.

At a meeting with an expert commission tasked with elaborating constitutional reforms, Serzh Sargsyan said he doesn’t intend to run for president again or aspire for the prime minister’s post, reports the presidential press office.

“I declare officially, in front of you – before starting the round of discussions – that I, Serzh Sargsyan, will never nominate myself for the post of the Republic of Armenia president. If, as a result of final discussions, the path chosen conflicts with my desire – I mean the parliamentary government model – I will not aspire for the prime minister’s post either. I am even confident that the helm of state must not be sought  more than twice by the same person in Armenia. I head the Republican Party of Armenia, the biggest political force in the country, and whatever constitutional concept we finally arrive at, the Republican Party of Armenia will keep playing its ponderous and decisive role in Armenia. At least, we will doubtlessly pursue that path. I say this, because I realize the Constitution’s role, and the democratic values’ importance for our country. It is much more important than all possible speculations, so to say, which stem from light-mindedness. And I say this as a guarantee of the free implementation of constitutional reforms, as well as a guarantee of freedom for you,” said the president.
