‘Both…and’ policy welcome – Gagik Makaryan

Chairman of the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia (RUEA) Gagik Makaryan is for the process of Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union slowing down and for Armenia launching the “both…and” policy.

“I see two reasons for that because I want Armenia to be on the alert. The crucial changes involving Russia may prove momentous.

"Secondly, I can say our exports to the Customs Union member-states are far from being excellent in terms of both politics and commodities. I think our government is trying to use both the models – the Customs Union and the European Union,” Makaryan said.

French President François Hollande made rather interesting remarks.

“He said that Armenia was a landlocked country, and our products were expensive and not competitive because of transport problems,” Makaryan said.

“We appear to be moving toward the Customs Union, but we are not yet, and Europe is seeking to win us over,” he said.

Armenia is making use of a factor mentioned by President Serzh Sargsyan.

“The Customs Union member-states’ population is 200 million, which is half of the EU population. That is, we are tempting the EU by offering it to start up and develop businesses in Armenia. That is, Armenia can serve as a bridge to a 200 million-strong market,” Makaryan said.

With respect to the ‘both…and’ policy, Makaryan said that the French president did not rule out this option. This is important because France is one of the EU founding states.
