An Armenian language translation database has now been made available online to offer definitions of 94,000 word items and their translation into 10 different languages.

The initiative is the result of a joint collaboration between the State Language Inspectorate and IMMA LLC.

A memorandum of understanding to launch the database was signed today between Head of the Inspectorate Sergo Yeritsyan and the company’s director and the president of the Yerevan State Engineering University, Professor Edik Manukyan.

IMMA LLC has processed Armenian explanatory and translation dictionaries (www.translator.am). The project received assistance by the Ministry of Diaspora and the State Engineering University. The Language Inspectorate will be in charge of quality assurance and control.

“This project is aimed to breed patriotism and assist in the preservation of the Armenian identity, so I am hopeful that the software will be considerably useful for those who wish to preserve their native tongue against the backdrop of the continuing migration trends,” Yeritsyan told reporters after the signing ceremony.

He said a failure to compile and enrich databases of the kind would pose threat to the preservation of the native language (especially Western Armenian) in future.

“This database will enable anyone to have his/her native language close at hand. We have processed a new technology for dictionaries to add accompanying voice properties to every letter and sound,” Edik Manukyan, a professor of the State Engineering University, said, adding that the translation of every dictionary item was coordinated with the inspectorate.
