Integration important for boosting Armenia’s economy –MP

Integration for any small country is very important for boosting the domestic economy, a lawmaker of the ruling Republican party has said, commenting on country’s upcoming membership in the Eurasian Economic Union.


“We have to integrate into different organizations. We had said that we were heading to Europe, but we weren’t
given any guarantees in order to choose the European integration,” Manvel Badeyan told a news conference on Tuesday, recalling the Russian authorities’ earlier statement expressing an intention to join the West.


“The Eurasian Union promised us more, first of all [guarantees to] our security,” he said, ruling out the possibility of entrusting security and economic integration to two different structures simultaneously.


Hovhannes Igityan, a member of the Armenian Pan-National Movement also attending the news conference, said he thinks that Russia is blackmailing Armenia using the unsettled Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as an appropriate tool. “I find that the EEU does give us certain guarantees, but all the developments prove that the Nagorno-Karabakh security issue is no higher today than it used to be,” he noted.


Badeyan said for his part that he sees the Russia sanctions’ impact on almost all the economies. “Our country, which has no strength reserve at all, is more vulnerable, so all kinds of tensions will inevitably affect us,” he said, stressing the need of strengthening the country economy.


“Although the situation has changed and the conditions favorable to us have weakened, it would be absurd to give up the mechanisms that would boost our own market,” Badeyan said, adding that he doesn’t think that the EU has ever made or will make any big investments in Armenia.
