Fair trade workers concerned over expected increase in customs duties
According to the Union of Informed Citizens NGO, about 90% of customs duties will be changed after Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
Tert.am talked to people at Yerevan’s ‘Firdusi’ trade fair to find out their opinion of the consequences should the customs duties be raised.
“It will affect us. If we raise our prices, we cannot sell our goods. It is a trade fair, and people are accustomed to low prices here,” trader Karen Hambartsumyan said.
Despite the USD appreciation against the AMD, they did not raise their prices, he said.
Mamikon Khachatryan says that traders mostly import clothing from Turkey.
“The more customs duties are raised the more the clothing price will be raised. We hardly have any trade now. The situation is worsening and small businesses are facing bankruptcy. The situation is bad in Russia and the social situation is getting worse here as well.”
Yuri Azdekyan points out low consumption. An increase in customs duties will cause a rise in prices.
“People show low purchasing power. Very few people come to the trade fair.”
Tert.am also inquired about shops’ expectations.
The manager of the OVS clothing store chain told Tert.am that the chain reduced the prices for all the goods a few days ago because of the AMD appreciation against the USD. However, if the customs duties on goods imported to Armenia from countries other than EEU member-states are raised, the store chain will inevitably raise its prices.
“If we have to pay higher taxes on our goods, it is logical that we’ll sell the goods at higher prices.”
The manager of one of the shops trading in branded leather bags told Tert.am that prices will not be raised in 80% of cases.
“Customs duties on staple goods will not be raised. But branded goods will rise in prices because the customs duties on them will reach 19% instead of the current 10%.”
