Electric Yerevan: Baghramyan Avenue closed as protest continues (live)

The protest against the rising electricity tariffs continues in the Baghramyan Avenue which remains closed for the 12th day running.
 

 

The Public Services Regulatory Commission made the decision to raise the power tariffs by 6.93 Drams (US $ 1 = 473 Armenian Darms) on June 17. The move spurred a public anger, attracting big crowds to Liberty Square two days later. The rally turned into a four-day sit-in, with more people joining the civic activists of the group “No to Plunder” at the protest site. The protest later continued in the Baghramyan Avenue after the police used force against the peaceful demonstrators who marched to the Presidential Palace last Monday to demand attention to the public demand. Policemen used water cannons to disperse the crowd. They also held 237 people who were released shortly after being taken to police precincts. Police officers in uniforms and plain clothes used force against the peaceful crowd, especially journalists, breaking video and photo cameras.


On Saturday, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan conducted a working consultation with officials in charge for economic policies. The meeting focused on Armenia’s energy security, addressing the existing shortcomings and possible solutions. The president said that a decision to annul the planned hike was extremely dangerous for the country’s energy sector. He promised government efforts to alleviate the population’s burden until the outcomes of the announced auditing are made public. The statement did not satisfy the civic group which subsequently headed back to Liberty Square to continue the rally. Some of the protesters, however, remained in the Baghramyan Avenue.

The Armenian Police on Wednesday issued a statement asking the organizers and the participants to end the rally not to obstruct the traffic movement.

Also, several residents were reported to have launched a petition, complaining about the extremely loud noise and inconvenience around.
