The meeting of the CIS leaders in Burabay, Kazakhstan, on Friday decided to appoint the next head of the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The presidents of Armenia, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan agreed that Tigran Sargsyan, a former prime minister of Armenia who is now the country’s ambassador to the United States, will replace Viktor Khristienko, the current chairman of the executive body.

The decision was announced by Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus’ re-elected president, who chaired the session, Rbc.ru reports.

Khristienko’s term in office expires in February, 2016.

The Belarusian leader said that Sargsyan’s candidacy is backed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin who formerly worked with him. “He is said to be a very experienced and progressive specialist. That is why we have appointed him the chairman of that commission. So he will start work beginning February 1,” Lukashenko told the participants of the meeting.
