Terrifying ear grown, using Van Gogh’s DNA
The artist van Gogh lost his ear more than one hundred years ago, but now the famously severed appendage is making its return in a New York exhibit, reports the Daily Mail.
The ear is a living replica of Vincent van Gogh’s, created by Diemut Strebe, who used genetic samples from the great-great-grandson of the artist’s brother.
The exhibit titled Sugababe debuts in New York at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, and its creator insists it is more than just a display of art, it’s a scientific feat.
German historians suggest that van Gogh’s ear may have been cut off during an argument with another artist, Paul Gauguin using a type of thin sword called a rapier.
The show also includes a scent-based piece inspired by German artist Joseph Beuys. Visitors of the original exhibition in Germany, according to Strebe, ‘loved the ear.’
