Russia-Turkey confrontation: Armenia cannot remain neutral – Ara Papyan

Armenia cannot remain neutral to the ongoing processes because it can only be affected by or benefit from them, says Ara Papyan, Head of the Modus Vivendi center.

“The influence of Russia-Turkey confrontation on region is quite a good chance in terms of foreign policy, but a grave domestic situation, especially in terms of economy. Regrettably, internal weakness does not allow us to make use of our foreign policy opportunities,” Mr Papyan told reporters.

The Russia-Turkey confrontation affords ample opportunities for Armenia’s activities in Russia to explain Armenia’s approaches. It will also influence the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev too declared the “one people two states” principle, and I think it accounts for a new policy declared by our ministry of defense: a switchover from a wait-and-see policy to a policy of retaliation.”

Russia’s interest account for increased arms supplies to Armenia.

“Of course, they are doing it in their own interests. But our concurring interest is the best policy. Should a military conflict break out, we will inevitable be involved,” Mr Papyan said.

Turkey is not going to view Armenia as a neutral side.
