Election 2017: New political bloc deal signed

Two former Armenian ministers of foreign affairs and a former minister of defense on Monday inked a political deal to unite their efforts ahead of the upcoming parliamentary election.


Raffi Hovhannisian, Vartan Oskanian and Seyran Ohanian signed a memorandum of understanding on creating a political bloc to run as a united team in the April 2 election.


Oskanian, who heads the political party Consolidation, had earlier teamed up with Ohanyan.


The new bloc includes also other, less prominent political forces.


It is open to more parties and individuals (from both Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh) wishing to run for election, reads the preamble of the document adopted.


“Today is a historic day for Armenia. We say ‘yes’ to Armenia’s sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. We must conduct an unbelievable campaign,” Hovhannisyan said at the ceremony of signing the memorandum.

 

“A lot of things have united us in both the past and present. All the three of us were at the roots of our country’s building. So this moment offers us a unique occasion to make changes in the country. Yet, we don’t think many things can change quite rapidly in Armenia.”

 

“We all will keep under spotlight the security of an Armenian citizen and [the Republic of] Armenia. We are here to work, and we are going to invest our experience in contributing to our country’s development and security,” said the politician.
