The camera in the iPhone 7 Plus was deemed the “future of photography”  – but the technology set for the 10th-anniversary is said to be “revolutionary”.

An analyst has revealed that Apple is planning on implementing a front-facing camera with an infrared module that senses 3D space in the iPhone 8 handset.

This system could be used for a range of applications including, snapping a selfie that would be added to an augmented world, facial recognition or iris scanning, the Daily Mail reports.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been sharing insider details about the iPhone 8, wrote a recent note to investors that was picked up by 9to5Mac.

He noted that this technology, which he said is “revolutionary”,  could be used in a various applications.

It could place the user’s face on a computer animated character – the front facing camera and 3D sensor would let iOS owners use their selfies for augmented reality.

And it could also be used in facial recognition or as an iris scanner for unlocking the device.

It is believed that the hardware will use an algorithm developed by PrimeSense, a firm acquired by Apple in 2013, which developed motion-sensing technology in Microsoft's Kinect Gaming system.

“AR can be really great, and we have been and continue to invest a lot in this”' Cook said in a conference call with analysts earlier this month.
