Healthcare system highly viable in Armenia – Aurora Prize laureate
The healthcare system is viable enough in Armenia to overcome all possible crises and challenges, a laureate of the Aurora Prize said today in Yerevan as he met with students and faculty of the State Medical University.
In his public lecture, Tom Katina, a surgeon who has for many years worked in South Africa, cited the healthcare reforms in the region as a good example of what hospital life could look like in wartime.
Describing his speech as an encouraging message to doctors in Armenia, Mr Katina said he is full of belief that they can achieve lot even under conditions of isolation.
Katina, known widely as Doctor Tom, said he devoted a large part of his career to mitigating the horrors of war in that part of the continent. Removing debris, dismembering limbs and delivering babies amid heavy bombings are now part of the routine practice of a man whom the Catholic Medical Mission Board dispatched to the region much before the war.
With his permanent presence in the Nuba Mountains (South Sudan), he works sparelessly provide his care and assistance to the population of 750,000. After the war erupted between the Sudanese government and the Sudan National Liberation Movement, he saved numberless people's lives in the Mother of Mercy hospital, the only functioning health institution in the region.
The doctor never left the country despite numerous offers and says he doesn't regret a bit for the decision.
After his lecture, the University's president, Armen Muradyan, honored Katina as Doctor Emeritus, expressing a firm belief that his exceptional example and speech would be highly instructive and inspiring for most future doctors.
