Battery breakthrough could soon mean charging smartphones four times a year

Smartphone addicts rejoice: a revolutionary new technology could make your life a lot easier.

A scientific breakthrough means you could get away with charging your gadget just once every three months.

It’s all thanks to scientists who have created a brand new processor material which lets your phone run on less power, the Sun reports.

Current processors in our phones use semi-conductors which need a constant flow of electricity.

But this new material will power a device using short bursts of energy – meaning it won’t zap your battery.

Scientists claim they could function perfectly using 100 times less energy than normal.

Researchers at the Universities of Michigan and Cornell have created the multiferroic materials which use magnetoelectric coupling mechanism and are made up of thin layers of atoms.

“Materials that exhibit simultaneous order in their electric and magnetic ground states hold promise for use in next-generation memory devices in which electric fields control magnetism,” wrote the scientists in a research paper published recently in scientific journal Nature
