SpaceX billionaire reveals 324 km/h Hyperloop pod test run
A fully-enclosed travel pod that could travel from Sydney to Melbourne in under three hours could be the future of public transport as we know it.
SpaceX billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted a video of a test Hyperloop pod run in which a potential passenger capsule reached speeds of 342 km/h in a fully vacuum-sealed tunnel.
The test run was part of a SpaceX-sponsored competition for student and non-student teams to compete over who could go the fastest in the safest way possible, Nine.com.au reports.
Musk said the high-speed footage came from the 2nd-placed WARR team, who hailed from Munich's Technical University.
Interestingly, many people attribute the business of building a global hyperloop system as one of Musk's business ventures – but he simply came up with the idea and then "open sourced" it, allowing as many interested parties as possible to cash in on the costly business of high speed underground tunnels.
Confusingly, while Musk doesn’t have a "hyperloop" company per se, he is the CEO of The Boring Company, an organisation that builds high-speed underground tunnels to transport vehicles.
Despite the enormous engineering hurdles – including creating a vacuum in a tunnel that's 1.2 kilometres long – many people have reservations about the Hyperloop concept.
The primary concerns of a high speed tunnel include passenger motion sickness and the potentially "frightening" way the Hyperloop pod accelerates to supersonic speeds.
But Musk downplayed the concerns, stating that a "Hyperloop passenger version wouldn’t have intense light strobe effect, nor uncomfortable acceleration".
The billionaire even cheekily added that a proper, full-length tube system would accelerate and decelerate so gradually no passenger would suffer from a spilt drink.
