Armenia launching milk quality improvement project

The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),  is launching a joint project aimed at improving the quality of animal food and milk production in Armenia.


The plan was discussed on Tuesday as Minister Ignati Arakelyan hosted a delegation led by John O’Connel, the FAO agrifood economist for Europe and Central Asia.

 

“It is really a very important project for us. We have a good history of cattle breeding, yet the situation in the sector isn’t absolutely satisfactory.  We know where we want to go, but there are questions to which we expect specific responses, as well as questions,” he said, according to the Ministry’s press service.


Arakelyan said he is hopeful that the project will offer effective strategies to promote the development of food production.


Mr O’Connel, for his part, elaborated on the two basic components - the first dealing with research in the field of animal food manufacturing and the second being more focused on milk re-procession technologies.


He said they are planning to conduct a seminar in November to evaluate the outcomes of the activities with representatives of the government, and the private sector.


The sides are later planning to develop a road map based on the studies conducted.  

Highly appreciating the initiative, Minister Arakelyan attached a great importance especially to close cooperation with the corresponding Ministry subdivisions. He said that the studies, available their data base, may offer effective tools in the implementation process, allowing the sides to save also considerable time and resources. Arakelyan further attached importance to the economic justification, expressing hope that the domestication of international experience will offer practical tools aiming to assist in the development of agriculture in the country.
