Volkswagen to build new Bakkie based on Atlas
An interesting new report out of Europe suggests that Volkswagen has plans to offer a new bakkie based on its Atlas crossover.
According to Automotive News Europe, the Wolfsburg-based brand will unveil a concept (alongside another Atlas-based show car) previewing the bakkie at the upcoming New York International Auto Show.
Unlike the Amarok, which runs on a ladder-frame chassis, the proposed production version of the new pick-up would share its MQB platform with the Atlas and thus take the fairly unusual form of a unibody bakkie (à la Honda Ridgeline), targeting pure lifestyle buyers, according to Carmag.co.za.
The report added that the new bakkie would likely be built in the Tennessee in the United States, citing a source as saying the planned pick-up would probably be sold exclusively in the US and Canada.
