Students in Yerevan school on strike, demanding principal’s resignation

Secondary school students in Yerevan went on strike on Friday to demand their principal’s resignation.
Teachers also joined the protest action against what is claimed to be "abuse of administrative resources". They complain that Ruzan Avetisyan, the principal of Monte Melkonyan Basic School, banned them from attending the recent anti-government protests led by opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan.
The school’s staff threatens to file a complaint with the municipality of Yerevan.
Members of the civic group (Daniel Ioannisyan, Anahit Bakhshyan, David Khazhakyan, etc) have also joined the protesting students and teachers to support their campaign.
“We are going to apply to Mayor [Taron Margaryan] to demand the principal’s dismissal."
"[Azizyan] does not evidently control the situation as her actions deserve no apology at all. She still has a chance to hand in a resignation,” David Khazhakyan noted.
An exit door was found locked just days after the start of the protests, a teacher of physical training added.
“The students were not able go out. A massive wooden [barrier] was placed there to block the exit. But the teachers wanted to go, and take part those rallies, so I opened the door. They later initiated a petition against me, but nobody signed anything,” he told journalists.
A teacher of biology is claimed to have later insulted and beaten several students.
The young protesters say they also have several video records.
