Armenia condemns Turkish-Azerbaijani economic blockade – parliament vice speaker

Armenia condemns the continuing economic blockade imposed by Turkey and Azerbaijan, which both are member-states of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), the vice speaker  of the National Assembly said today as he addressed an interstate event held on the sidelines of the organization's 51st Plenary Session in Tirana (Albania).


In a speech at a special ceremony of handing over the BSEC presidency to Armenia, Eduard Sharmazanov also called attention to the pressing concern, which he said should be under a permanent spotlight "as a serious violation of fundamental principles".


He reminded the attendees of Turkey’s intentional move to close the interstate border with Armenia in 1993 “as a sign of solidarity with Azerbaijan” which had incited an undeclared war against Nagorno-Karabakh. Sharmazanov noted that despite the reconciliation efforts, initiated back in October 2009, Turkey and Armenia  never proceeded to signing the bilateral protocols (on opening the borders and establishing diplomatic relations) “due to Ankara’s unjustified preconditions.”


“The policy of refusing to engage in economic cooperation cannot possibly pave way to resolving political problems. On the contrary, it may delay the solution of the existing political concerns. And such a solution is very often achievable through a close economic cooperation - as a tool potentially strengthening good-neighborly relations and promoting mutual confidence and a constructive dialogue.


“Progress in economic cooperation can be achieved only through decision-making – to the benefit of all the sides and based upon mutual interests and equality,” the parliament official added.
