Samsung set to release Galaxy Note 9

The Galaxy Note 9 is coming - and it could be a big deal. 


Samsung has sent out press invitations for its upcoming Unpacked event, scheduled to take place on August 9 at the huge Barclay's Center in New York City, the Daily Mail reports.

The huge venue is in keeping with Samsung's big budget launches as it attempts to recover from the disastrous Note 7, which had to be recalled after dozens spontaneously caught fire because of defective batteries.  

The invitation itself includes an S Pen in the photo, and the Note 8 was revealed around the same time last year.

The firm will be hoping to beat Apple, which releases its iPhones in September, by running the event a few weeks earlier. 

The Galaxy Note 9 and the Galaxy Tab S4 also both just recently passed through the FCC, according to Android Police. 

Not too much has been released about the new model, but it is expected to have the massive screen and Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 845 chipset that runs most of the flagship devices from 2018.  

According to Bloomberg, Samsung will focus the launch on an upgraded camera. 

It is also expected to have an all-glass back, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. 

Some rumours also claim it will have a fingerprint sensor under the screen - something Apple was unable to do in the iPhone X, which instead relies on facial recognition. 

The invitation to Unpacked also hinted that the S Pen may come in a new yellow color. 

A new patent, originally filed in September of last year, was published this week after Samsung asked it to remain private.

The patent appears to show Samsung is paring back its physical hardware in favor of hidden features and wireless connectivity.

It also shows no fingerprint sensor, although one could be embedded under the screen, and no headphone jack. 

The invitation hints that Samsung's S Pen may be available in new colors, and could hint that the company is looking for ways to expand usage of the smart stylus.

The Galaxy Note 8, unveiled in New York last year, sported a dual-lens camera, animated messages, expanded note-taking, and a lower battery capacity.

The previous Note 7 had to be recalled after dozens spontaneously caught fire because of defective batteries.

Samsung's Note phones tend to be a niche product aimed at people who use their phones more than the average consumer.

The Note 8's screen measured 6.3 inches diagonally, up from the Note 7's 5.7 inches, without feeling much
bigger.
