New mayor of Yerevan sworn into office
The Yerevan municipality on Saturday hosted a special ceremony of inaugurating the new mayor of the capital city.
Hayk Marutyan, whose political bloc My Step won an overwhelming majority of votes (81.06%) in the September 23 elections, promised to serve honestly during his tenure, respecting the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Armenia, and the decisions of the Council of Elders. The popular comedian and actor, 42, also vowed to work conscientiously “to the benefit of the capital and its residents”.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by President Armen Sarkissian, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, high-ranking government officials, as well as honorary citizens of Yerevan, artists, and public and political figures.
Pursuant to the Council’s Rules of Procedure (Clause 125), the signed text of oath was deposited with the Yerevan City Museum. Artur Ispiryan, a member of the city council, and Tigran Mansuryan, a leading composer and an honorary citizen of Yerevan, handed over the emblem of the capital city (the initials of the 12 Armenian capitals featured against the background of the Armenian highlands) to the mayor.
