Republican MP accused of bribery affair
A lawmaker from the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has been accused of accepting bribe in the amount of US $14 million.
Based on evidence obtained from the Special Investigative Service (SIS), Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan has issued a sanction for initiating prosecution against, and arresting, Aram Harutyunyan, a former minister of nature protection (2007-2014).
An inquest into the criminal case revealed that Harutyunyan required and received the above-mentioned sum in 2008 for issuing lincenses allowing the explotation of 10 non-ferrous metal mines in several regions of Armenia (Syunnik, Gegharkunik, Lori and Kotayk).
To cover up the origins of the sum received, Harutyunyan later legalized illicit property through bank transfers (money laundering).
Two persons are facing charges over complicity in a bribery affair involving a high-ranking government official. Two others have been accused of committig the same offence. Law enforcement authorities have ordered their arrest; both are on the wanted list, according to an official press statement released earlier today.
A further probe revealed that Harutyunyan owns several private residences and apartments in different districts of Yerevan, seven-storey building premies and a restaurant-complex close to Republic Square, as well as a public facility with an estimated value of 427 million Armenian Drams (AMD 485 = USD 1) in David Anhaght street, and agricultural landlots in Kotayk region.
