Nagorno-Karabakh issue ‘not discussed’ at Pashinyan-Putin meeting

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says his Thursday talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin did not address the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.


Pashinyan, who travelled to Moscow for a working visit on Thursday, took to Facebook shortly after his return late at night to elaborate on the key issues discussed with the Russian leader.


He said that the key topic of their talks were the Armenian-Russian relations and the strategy of their further development. “The discussions unfolded mainly over those issues, and I can state the kind of perfect understanding which we have on the development of the relations between our countries. By and large, however, it was a kind of summary of the meetings we had so far - to sum up the past eight months [of our joint talks] and to discuss the cooperation between the two countries’ government bodies. The atmosphere was all in all positive,” he said.


Pashinyan also agreed that the frequently held meetings with the Russian leader testify to the unique nature of the bilateral ties.


The acting premier added that they did not cover the entire scope of the Armenian-Russian agenda but managed to  briefly discuss the situation around the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). “Our position is that we need institutional solutions to push for amendments to the CSTO Charter to adjust to the current situation.”


The transit price of natural gas supply, a topic widely expected to receive a proper attention, was not part of the agenda either, the acting premier added.


“We certainly agreed that it was too sensitive a topic for the bilateral relations. All in all, I am optimistic about that too and hopeful that the developments be really desirable – or not at least undesirable for us,” he said.
