Artsakh leader, predecessor urge Armenia's prosecutor general to consider Kocharyan's release
The former and current presidents of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) have urged the prosecutor general of Armenia to reconsider Robert Kocharyan's arrest in connection with the 2008 post-electoral coup.
In their joint letter, Bako Sahakyan and Arkady Ghukasyan ask Artur Davtyan to revise and replace the measure of restraint against the former president to enable him to attend the upcoming celebrations dedicated to the Peace and Victory Day, the anniversary of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army and the Liberation of Shushi. Highlighting Kocharyan's contribution to the country's development as the first president of Artsakh (1994-1997), they also express their willingness to offer the necessary reasonable guarantees to facilitate his release from custody until the end of the prosecution.
''We are hopeful that you, with your decision, will enable all the three leaders of Artsakh to join the May 9 celebrations in Stepanakert and Shushi, thus definately delivering also your message of solidarity and unity not only to our society but also the entire world, as well as our adversary,'' reads part of the address.
