Pashinyan’s thesis for mutually acceptable deal over Karabakh ‘needs further development’ – Karen Bekaryan

The latest developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) peace process create the kind of impression that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanship has proposed a solution acceptable only to one or several of the sides, political analyst Karen Bekaryan said Friday, commenting on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s call for reachig a settlement satisfying “all the three sides”.

During the analytical broadcast Between the Lines, aired by Armnews TV Channel, Belaryan said he treats the proposal for a conceptual agreement (between Azerbaijan and the three co-chairs of the mission) too implicit a remark needing a further and more detailed clarification.

Meantime he emphasized a very important moment in the fact that the critics never practically questioned the motives behind the prime minister’s focus on the interests of people in Azerbaijani (a factor which the authorities use time and again for very different speculations).

“When we bring the right to self-determination to the domain of an acceptable polemic, we simply close an essentially important door, i.e. – the right to self-determination and the need for respecting that right, creating a kind of situation which predicts little chances, to say the least, for reaching an advantageous outcome,” he added.

Bekaryan also addressed the prime minister’s recent vitis to Italy, highlighting especially his speech at the Institute of International Political Studies in Milan. “When Azerbaijan is trying to invest every possible effort to apply the term ‘the Azerbaijani community of Karabakh’ in an attempt to gain dividends, the kind of discriminatory attitude makes not only Karabakh, but also the problem of our compatriots who left the country increasingly actual on the other side of the scale. Hence this is a thesis which needs and must be developed further,” he added.
