1990 Baku pogroms 'rule out future peaceful co-existence' – opinion

The Baku authorities’ genocidal actions, committed against their ethnic Armenian population some 30 years ago, rule out future chances of a peaceful co-existence between the Azerbaijani Tuirks and Armenians of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), the president of the Assembly of Azerbaijani-Armenians said today.

“What happened in Baku was a [specially arranged] plan perpetrated by the Azerbaijani leadership. They were trying to free Baku of Armenians to later move the genocidal machine to Artsakh. As many as 500 Armenians were burned alive in the most brutal ways, whereas that country - which itself orchestrated the slaughter of its own civilians in the capital - is now trying to propose a certain status, talking nonsense about territorial integrity,” Grigory Ayvazyan told reporters in the Armenian Genocide commemoration park.

Noting that the Soviet-Armenian authorities repeatedly recognized the violent acts as genocide, he made his call upon the current government to follow suit (to reaffirm the predecessors’ position).

“That will be the best solution. The Azerbaijani Armenians’ problem must certainly dominate the negotiation agenda. The deprivations suffered by the Armenians in Azerbaijan – whether moral, material or territorial – must be necessarily on the negotiating table. Instead of talking about the Azerbaijani community of Karabakh, [it is important to address] the violated rights of the half a million Azerbaijani-Armenians who remained in the shadow for 30 years. It is not just a humanitarian issue if used correctly, as it may bring long-yearned decisions and solutions to our country,” Ayvazyan said.
