Armenian prime minister says maintaining year-long strict lockdown 'impossible'

An increase in the number of the novel coronavirus cases will be inevitable in Armenia until next spring, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today, admitting the impossibility of keeping the country under a strict lockdown for the entire period.

"When we were enforcing the restrictions [back in March], our hope was that the infection would be eradicated in the couple of months to come. But now we are speaking about ending the lockdown, because it is obvious today that there will be more cases until next April-May. So we cannot keep on living under the lockdown regime for a whole year," he told the cabinet meeting.

Pashinyan made the remark after the minister of health briefed the executive on the recent statistics. Citing the latest data by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Arsen Torosyan confirmed that the number of the registered cases increased by 134 to 2,066 in the past day, with two more infected patients having died. He added at 17 more people are now reported to be in a critical condition.

Deputy Prime Minister Tigran Avinyan, who now also serves as the Armenian Government's special emergency coordinator, said several infrastructures whose functioning is deemed essential to the country's economic activity will re-open starting from May 4 "provided they observe the mandatory rules of hygiene ". But he said the educational institutions will remain closed, with the restrictions continuing also in the cultural sector and entertainment industries.
