Armenia moves to lift lockdown restrictions
A deputy minister of economy on Friday announced plans for the gradual removal of the lockdown measures imposed amid the spread of the coronavirus disease.
Varos Simonyan said that the major trading centers will remain closed and public transport will be banned for a certain period.
"The lockdown restrictions will be lifted to authorize all the citizens' free movement across Armenia while maintaining the ban on public transport," he told reporters at the Government's Information Center.
Meantime the deputy minister warned of the possible risks of the virus spread.
Varosyan said that the lockdown will be removed gradually after the decision is published, with certain restrictions still expected to apply to several forms of economic activity (particularly wholesale and retail trade). "The malls and the department stores will be closed. Only food and supply chains operating locally, as well as agricultural markets will work for now."
The depuity minister also unveiled plans for re-opening the reprocessing industries (textile, furniture, shoe manufacturing, polygraphy and other sub-sectors). "To ensure public food supply, the restaurants and cafes with open-air spaces will be functioning. Their activity will be authorized provided they operate out in the open. No services will be permitted in closed spaces," Varosyan said.
He added they intend to open also the botanical parks, zoos and special nature protection sites, and authorize the operation of the reserves. "Sports facilities' functioning will be permitted exclusively for the conduct of sporting events involving professional sportsmen. Also individual services, including laundry, cleaning and dry cleaning, and the operation of beauty salons will be permitted starting in May 4 this year," the deputy minister explained.
