Armenia to face 'higher unemployment' after epidemic, deputy minister warns
The spreading coronavirus epidemic in Armenia will inevitably affect also the country's labor market, increasing the unemployed population by 40,000 more people in the couple of months to come, a deputy minister of labor and social issues said today, citing the International Labor Organization's (ILO) latest findings.
In his speech at the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Healthcaare and Social Affairs, Arman Udumyan called attention, particularly, to the predicted 1.3% rise in the global unemployment rate (to an estimated 19%).
"The unemployment will largely affect the services sector and public food, and to an extent also - the development industries. Also the seasonal workers who go mainly to Russia will, in all likelihood, add to the number of the unemployed," he noted.
Udumyan also briefed the Committee on two employment programs elaborated by the Ministry, adding that two more proposals are now under consideration. "From January 1 until March 1, 305 people landed jobs thanks to the State Employment Agency; some 2,830 more individuals were referred to specific employers after consultations," he added.
According to the deputy minister, the agency's database had registered 85,900 unemployed people and job-seekers as of April 1.
