Young Republican activists call for western missions' reaction to 'permissiveness' in Armenia

Young activists from the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) on Monday rallied outside the OSCE member states' embassies, as well as the UN Office in Yerevan, to raise their voice of anger against the western institutions' inaction over the "continuing permissiveness" in the country.

The crowd of 100 activists submitted letters to the heads of the missions to brief them on the the "political and legal abuse" unrelated to the "logic of democracy"

The office of the EU Delegation to Armenia was the first site of the protests. "Why did we start from the EU Delegation? Because Ms Ambassador [Andrea Wiktorin], with her biased silence, gives the kind of impression that the European institutions are really silent on the issues, whereas the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe and all the rest have expressed their opinion on this kind of permissiveness," said Hayk Mamijanyan, the leader of the party's youth wing.

Blaming the authorities for prolonging the epidemic-conditioned national emergency "intentionally" in an attempt to prevent public protests, the activists said they observe all the rules of hygiene to avoid police sanctions. "We are holding these rallies to give the authorities to understand that they cannot possibly do anything. Our authorities must be taken down a peg or two - on both the domestic political and international platforms - to understand that it's not virtually anything that they can do," Mamijanyan said, elaborating on the letter which he described as a "call for explanation to the non-legal and anti-constitutional realities".
