We are losing the battle against this virus - healthcare specialist warns of new COVID-19 'anti-record'
Armenia is losing the battle against coronavirus, with the increasing number of confirmed cases marking new anti-records, a healthcare organizer said on Sunday, reiterating the concerns expressed by high-ranking government officials.
In an interview with Tert.am, Gagik Mirijanyan warned of a new, second wave of outbreak expected in October.
"We will be facing the second wave in October. I don't know whether or not enumeration makes any sense in our case, but that wave is expected. We are in a catastrophic situation today, which we do not virtually deny. And yes, it is the result of an omission in the [healthcare] sector. With over 25,000 confirmed cases, we are thinking about re-profiling medical institutions only now, after hearing so much criticism, not managing to address the needs even after the re-profiling process. What does this speak about if not omissions?" he asked.
"We are running after the virus, and if we admit that this is a war, then we are losing the battle."
Mirijanyan also warned of a further increase in the lethal cases. Addressing the chances of foreign assistance, he stressed the importance of inviting specialists from those countries which demonstrated success in the fight against the pandemic.
Meantime he called for the Ministry of Health to publish statistics revealing different medical institutions' results. "They could make available lists indicating the number of those who were cured in both medical centers leading a total fight against COVID[-19] and multi-profile hospitals which have opened [special] departments. The results may turn out more positive in the latter case. The [National] Burn Center, which is now specializing in treating COVID [patients], for example, appears to be the second largest hospital in the fight against COVID, whereas in the past, it could not manage the treatment of even 50 patients needing specialized assistance. So it is important to analyze those data," Mirijanyan said.
