Footages released by Azerbaijani servicemen 'amount to flagrant violation' of Armenian officer's rights - lawmaker
An opposition MP from the Prosperous Armenia party has slammed the Azerbaijani military's move to release the footage featuring the Armenian serviceman detained in the country after getting lost and accidentally crossing the state border.
In a public statement on Facebook, Naira Zohrabyan says she has appealed to international organizations, calling for their adequate evaluation and response.
The lawmaker insists that the violence and inhuman and degrading treatment against Gurgen Alaverdyan, an officer of the Armed Forces of Armenia, and the subsequent release of the scenes featuring him being handcuffed and given bad names, constitute the most flagrant violations of the principles enshrined in the Geneva Conventions.
Zohrabyan notes that Azerbaijan, a Council of Europe member state which acceded to numerous international instruments, including the Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, continues consistently violating and blatantly disrespecting its international commitments.
Citing earlier precedents of degrading and torturing Armenian prisoners of war (at times even to death), the lawmaker regrets that those violent incidents never received a proper international evaluation.
"I expect the international organizations' reaction - with their entire set of tools - to Azerbaijan's blatant violations of human rights," she says.
