Armenia urges European Court's intervention to extend interim measure against Azerbaijan
The Republic of Armenia has submitted a request to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), asking it to consider the possibility of extending the recently imposed interim measure upon Azerbaijan.
The bid was filed on Sunday after evidence emerged that the Baku authorities demonstrate an inhuman and degrading treatment to prisoners of war and dead bodies, Yeghishe Kirakosyan, Armenia's representative to the Strasbourg court, told reporters.
"We applied to the ECHR yesterday, considering the developments of the past couple of days and weeks, i.e. - the video footages clearly featuring prisoners of war executed, dead bodied mutilated and beheaded, and other episodes which are horrific and simply unacceptable from the point of view of human rights. It was in view of those developments that we turned to the ECHR, requesting an extension of the interim measure to make it applicable not only to civilian objects and the population but also to any person under the Azerbaijani authorities' control to ensure his or her security," he said, expressing hope for a positive conclusion.
Admitting that the measures will not be easy to enact amid the ongoing war developments, Kirakosyan nonetheless stressed the importance of their influence at the current phase, as well as in the future processes.
Armenia applied to the ECHR on September 27 (the day of the eruption of the hostilities on the Nagorno-Karabakh frontline) with a request to enforce an interim measure against Azerbaijan to end the shelling of the civilian objects along the borders of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) and to urge that country to refrain from indiscriminate offensives targeting the civilian population and infrastructures. The ECHR satisfied the request.
There is also documented evidence that Turkey deployed mercenaries from Syria to Azerbaijan to join the country's military in the fighting against the Armenian side.
