How Football Can Become a Tool for Personal Development: The Football Coach Presents His Own Methodology in His Book
Arman Sargsyan shares his personal experience in his book "Beyond the Field: Building Champions in Life and Football," emphasizing that football is not an end goal but a means. His message is clear: the greatest victories are achieved not on the playing field, but along life's journey, and the strong character forged through sports becomes a solid foundation for success in any field. Tert.am spoke with the author-coach about his path, football career, and the unique methodology presented in the book.
-What makes your methodology unique, and what impact does it have on football players and the coaching community?
-The book introduces a unique methodology that is already being applied by many coaches in their training today. Through this approach, we observe that players become more focused, psychologically resilient, and better equipped to understand the tactical aspects of the game. Notably, the methodology has also been approved by UEFA-licensed specialists, who have emphasized that it aligns with modern European standards and promotes player development.
-What lies at the core of your methodology, how did your football journey start, and what lessons from that journey do you pass on today?
-My football story began in Yerevan, at FC Urartu, I spent twelve years as a professional player. Those years shaped me, instilling discipline, teamwork, and psychological resilience—qualities that later became the foundation of my coaching philosophy. After relocating to Los Angeles, I chose to apply my accumulated experience to coaching.
-Before studying sports psychology and writing your book based on it, what other achievements did you accomplish in the field of football?
-Over the years, I have earned a number of important certifications, including the 11v11 License and 9v9 Grassroots License from the United States Soccer Federation, as well as the Grassroots 7v7 Coaching License. Additionally, I am a certified scout with the Professional Football Scouting Association and a member of the U.S. Soccer Coaching Network.
-Returning to your book and the coaching methodology: can you tell us how you developed it and put it into practice?
-I have integrated my coaching methodology with European football and the American coaching system, enriching it with elements of developmental psychology. The result is a methodology through which children not only learn to play football, but also develop the personal qualities and skills necessary for success in life. Athletes learn self-confidence, discipline, responsibility, focus, and emotional resilience. I teach my students to view defeat as an opportunity to learn and to overcome challenges in order to grow - not only in sports, but also in life. Working with this methodology, I have seen that it is practical and produces tangible results.
-To sum up, can we say that you focus on developing both sports psychology and key human qualities in your students?
-Yes, I interact with them not only as a coach, but also as a friend, guiding them to become leaders both on and off the field.
-And at the end please tell us where the book can be purchased.
-The book can be purchased on Amazon.
