Armenia has already taken the first step toward the EU by adopting a bill on launching the EU accession process: European Commission Representative

Armenia is closer to the European Union than ever before. Yerevan has already taken the first step toward the EU by adopting a bill on launching the process of joining the EU. This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert.

Speaking about Armenia–EU rapprochement, Markus Lammert recalled the first historic EU–Armenia summit held in May, as well as cooperation within the framework of the “Resilience and Growth Plan” and the European Peace Facility.

According to the European Commission representative, Armenia has already taken the “first step toward the EU” by adopting a law on launching the European integration process. Lammert described this step as an “important symbolic signal.”

At the same time, the European Commission recalled that EU membership takes place within a “clearly defined, merit-based process.” According to Lammert, this process begins with the state submitting a formal application for membership.

He emphasized that Brussels is already working with Armenia on further rapprochement, particularly in the areas of transport connectivity, trade, and other fields of cooperation.
