Czech President Petr Pavel welcomes the progress in normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that the process began in Prague in 2022 and continued on August 8, 2026, in Washington. An Armenpress correspondent reports from Prague.

The Czech president made the remarks during a joint press conference following his meeting with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan at the presidential residence. He was referring to the quadrilateral meeting held in Prague on October 6, 2022, on the sidelines of the first summit of the European Political Community, attended by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, French President Emmanuel Macron, and President of the European Council Charles Michel.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration, through which both sides recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“We have good news that the situation in the South Caucasus, which had been a conflict zone for a long time, has calmed down, and relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are being normalized. This path began in Prague in 2022 and culminated on August 8 last year in Washington, when the process of normalizing relations and establishing peace gained new momentum,” Petr Pavel said.

He also addressed the process of normalizing Armenia-Turkey relations, expressing hope that both the political and economic ties between Armenia and Turkey will be strengthened—something that is also in the interests of the Czech Republic and the European Union.
